What is the best method for counting change back?

I know how to count change but i just need more practice because i don't want to rip people off or get ripped off. Is there a certain rule where however much change you're giving back determine weather you're counting from the next dollar up? (ex. change is 11.67 they hand you a $20), does it being over 50 cents or under 50 cents make a difference in weather you count from $12, $13 or what? What is the best method for counting change back?

If they pay you in full dollars ....

Rule 1: From the next dollar up, always count up to the total dollars paid for the number of dollars in change. Count down to the bill amount for the number of cents in change.

In your example, bill amount is 11.67. Next dollar amount is 12. 20 - 12 = 8.

12 - 11.67 is 33 cents

So, change = 8 dollars and 33 cents
