What did people used to throw at miscreants in the stocks and did they ever throw anything smelly?

Hi. Is it true that in the middle ages people used to throw smelly missiles at criminals in the stocks? I'd love to know what people in the stocks used to have thrown at them! Would a miscreant in the stocks have been quite messy and smelly by the end of her punishment?



I imagined that in the middle ages most people wouldn't have had baths or showers, so I just wondered how a criminal in the stocks would have managed to clean herself at the end of her punishment. Would there have been anywhere for her to clean her dirty clothes or wash some of the muck off her face? I tend to get really muddy at hockey practice and I'm always so glad that I can have a nice warm shower as soon as I get back to the changing room!
